Austin air cleaners are medical/dental grade machines with true medical grade HEPA filters, plus activated carbon—the best technology for removing aerosols that carry virus particles in the air. The HealthMate Plus features activated charcoal carbon with zeolite plus potassium iodide. Potassium iodide, a chemisorber, improves the adsorption of chemicals including airborne sterilants, disinfectants and mercury.

Austin Air cleaners are used in dental and medical practices around the world, including NASA, FEMA, The American Red Cross, Cincinnati Children’s, Boston Beth Israel, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Washington Hospitals. You, your patients and your staff will feel safer knowing you are breathing clean air.

The short answer is YES. Our true grade medical HEPA media with activated charcoal carbon removes particles .015 mu in size, which is much smaller than the HEPA standards set by the AEC and smaller than the COVID-19 virus. Our true medical grade HEPA and activated carbon is the best technology for removing aerosols that carry virus particles. Read our study on the coronavirus size, transmission and NASA’s groundbreaking research on the use of HEPA filtration with and activated charcoal carbon bed.

Austin air cleaners are top rated and used in dental and medical practices around the world.

A 2011 study determined that the use of Austin Air cleaners reduced the number of unscheduled asthma visits and asthma symptoms for children exposed to secondhand tobacco smoke. (Pediatrics. 2011. 127(1): 93–101.) A 2020 study demonstrates that HEPA filtration improves asthma control in children exposed to traffic-related airborne particles. (Indoor air. 2020. 30(2):235-243.) For more research, please contact us.

The cubic feet per minute (CFM) rate is the measurement of how much air passes through the unit in one minute.

Often, manufacturers, distributors and customers confuse air cleaner fan rating with the actual CFM rate. While an Austin Air standard has a fan rating of 400 CFM, this is only a measure of how much air the unit moves without the filter. The filter impedes the air flow and reduces the actual volume of air that is moved through the machine.

The Austin Air standard size units have an actual rating of 250 CFM on the highest setting. The Austin Air junior size units have an actual rating of 125 CFM on the high setting.

ACH is the the air changes a unit can make for a particular room in an hour. First, multiply cubic feet per minute (CFM) by 60 to learn the cubic feet per hour (CFH).

Our standard units have a CFM of 250 x 60 = 15,000 CFH. Then, divide 15,000 by the cubic feet in the room to learn the ACH. A 10 X 10 operatory or office with eight-foot ceilings has an ACH of 18.75 with an Austin Air Standard (10’ x 10’ x 8’ > 18.75 ACH @ 250 CFM).

The Austin Air HealthMate Plus. This powerhouse has over 60 sq. ft. of true medical grade HEPA media to help remove bacteria and virus from the air and 15 lbs. of activated charcoal to adsorb over 3,000 chemicals. (Dental practices routinely use a wide range of chemical products: sterilants and disinfectants, including glutaraldehyde; glutaraldehyde with phenol; hydrogen peroxide; hydrogen peroxide with peracetic acid; ortho-phthalalhyde (OPA); alcohols (ethyl, isopropyl); quaternary ammonium chloride as well as oxidizers (bleach); formaldehyde and phenolics.)

The Healthmate Plus includes the chemisorber potassium iodide mixed into the carbon/zeolite bed. Chemisorbers break down large molecules (including mercury) and make them more adsorbable by the charcoal. The HealthMate Plus is the best choice for managing bacteria, viruses and toxic chemicals in the air.

When an amalgam filling is removed, mercury can become an aerosol. For added protection in dental offices, the HealthMate Plus features potassium iodide, a chemisorber that is added to the activated carbon/zeolite bed. Potassium iodide is particularly capable of breaking down mercury and making it more adsorbable by the charcoal. The HealthMate Plus is the best option to help manage mercury in the aerosols at a dental office.

The Austin Air HealthMate is rated to deliver cleaner air for areas up to 1500 sq. ft. with one air exchange per hour. At The Air Cleaner Store, we almost always suggest standard sized units for all commercial use. Standards have twice the CFM, twice the ACH, more than twice the media and double the overall filtering capacity compared with Austin Air Juniors. For dentists, that means the Austin Air Standard removes airborne particles (virus and bacteria) and airborne chemicals (disinfectants, sterilants and mercury) twice as fast. The Standards give you more bang for the buck.

Usually one unit for each operating area is sufficient; however, we recommend that you consult with us so we can assess the square footage, partitions and conditions in your space to determine optimal coverage.

Austin Air cleaners are whisper quiet, in the 45 dB to 63 dB range, depending on the fan speed being used.
No. The EPA, CDC and The American Lung Association consider ozone to be a toxic air pollutant with potentially dangerous side effects. Some competing air cleaner brands use ultraviolet (UV), ionization or plasma technologies, which do produce ozone, so this is an important factor to consider.

Many inexpensive products rely on technologies that produce ozone, provide only a small amount of filter media and require replacement filters at least annually, which adds to life-cost of the product.

The Austin Air machine has a 5-year parts and labor warranty and a 5 -year prorated warranty on the filter assembly.

If a product is damaged in shipping, the unit is replaced immediately by Austin Air. I have sold thousands of units over the last 17 years and had less than a handful of customers who have had problems with the units. In the rare event that a unit has a problem during its 5-year warranty, you would ship it back to Austin Air without the filter – this makes it about half the shipping weight. You would be responsible for the outbound shipping cost and Austin Air takes care of the rest, including repairs or replacement if needed.
